Comments
Central Asia consists mostly of desert and is perhaps best known for the ancient “Silk Road,” which is at the heart of the tourist business. The area also contains vast deposits of gold and minerals as well as oil and natural gas which, it is hoped, will bring prosperity. Irrigation provides a basis for agriculture but overuse of the rivers that feed the ecologically damaged Aral and Caspian Seas threatens the economic viability of the region. More than 60% of the population live in rural areas and, at 3% per year, the population growth rate is considered high by global standards. Central Asia is still considered a hardship region. Although population expansion will likely exacerbate problems relating to health and environmental conditions, the 98% literacy rate (if sustained) allows for a measure of optimism since the effect of declines in Soviet-era production.
